Strawberry Hugo Spritz Recipe

August 10, 2023

The Hugo Spritz is the 2023 drink of the summer (according to pretty much everyone: Wine Enthusiast, BuzzFeed, and Better Homes and Gardens included). The Hugo Spritz is a deliciously light, floral, and fresh alternative to the bitter and bright Aperol Spritz, and it’s classically made with elderflower liqueur, fresh mint, Prosecco, and club soda (with the optional addition of a little lemon or lime). If you’re looking for a ripe summer-berry twist on this modern classic, I recommend giving this easy Strawberry Hugo Spritz recipe a try.

Strawberry Hugo Spritz Ingredients:

  • 1-2 oz Strawberry-Infused St. Germain (see below)
  • Handful of Fresh Mint
  • 4 oz Bubbly
  • 1 oz Club Soda
  • Strawberry and Fresh Mint to Garnish

Instructions:

Start by pouring 1-2 oz of strawberry-infused St. Germain to a large goblet. Next, add 7-10 fresh mint leaves, and muddle gently: if you muddle too aggressively, your spritz can begin to taste bitter. Next, fill the goblet with ice, then add approximately 4 oz of bubbly. If you’re using a sweeter sparkling wine like Prosecco, you may want to add a little fresh lemon or lime juice as well to balance out the sweetness. Top off the cocktail with an ounce of club soda, stir to combine, then garnish with a strawberry and a fresh mint sprig. Serve, and enjoy.

Strawberry-Infused St. Germain Recipe:

  • 1 cup St. Germain (or other elderflower liqueur)
  • 1 cup of washed, sliced strawberries

Instructions:

Begin by adding your St. Germain to a bottle (I used this infusion bottle by Crew and I loved it) or mason jar. Next, wash a container of strawberries and thinly slice them until you have a full cup then add them to your liqueur. Store your bottle or jar in a cool, dry place for approximately three days, agitating it occasionally. Finally, strain out the strawberries through a fine mesh strainer and keep the infused liqueur in your fridge until you’re ready to use it. While it might be usable longer, I personally recommend using it within 5 days.

Potential substitutions and considerations:

  • Feel free to use basil instead of mint.
  • Watermelon, pineapple, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries all make nice alternatives to strawberries. Note that you may have to muddle or slice some of these fruits before infusion for optimal flavor.
  • If you use a dry bubbly like I did (Argyle) you may want to add a bit more of your infused St. Germain to balance out the flavors.
